Sustainable Development: Meaning and Definition
Reviewed and approved by Dr. Anamika ShrivastavaPublished Last updated
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Defined in the Brundtland Commission’s report Our Common Future, it requires keeping resource use and waste within the environment’s carrying capacity.
In more detail
Sustainable development joins three concerns: lasting growth, fairness within this generation and fairness between generations. It asks that natural capital not be run down faster than it renews and that poor people be able to meet their needs. Indicators now track emissions, resources and welfare, not GDP alone.
Example
Using wind and solar power in place of coal, and compost in place of chemical fertiliser, are steps towards sustainable development.
Key points
- Concern for the poor and for future generations.
- Extract renewables no faster than they regenerate.
- Needs clean energy and efficient technology.
Common mistake
Treating sustainability as an environmental issue only.
