Diversification in Agriculture: Meaning and Definition
Reviewed and approved by Dr. Anamika ShrivastavaPublished Last updated
Diversification in rural development has two aspects: shifting from a single crop to a mix of crops, and moving workers from farming to allied activities such as livestock, fisheries and horticulture and to non-farm work. It spreads risk and creates additional income, especially in seasons when farm work is scarce.
In more detail
Because agriculture is overcrowded, more of the growing rural labour force must find work elsewhere. Success depends on credit, marketing, storage and processing, which small producers often lack. Women are increasingly taking up non-farm work, and groups of women can run small enterprises with shared savings.
Example
A family growing only paddy adds a few dairy animals and a vegetable plot, so it earns during the months when there is no paddy work.
Key points
- Reduces risk from monsoon and prices.
- Allied activities: dairy, poultry, fisheries, horticulture.
- Non-farm work: agro-processing, crafts, tourism.
Common mistake
Thinking diversification means leaving farming.
